Russell’s experience with Whippets dates back over 36 years at this point in time. He got his first male Whippet (A Touch of Tonto – “Gemini”) in 1973. Gemini ended up not being show caliber so Russell worked with him in the obedience ring where he got his Companion Dog title in three straight trials. In 1975, he got Mystic Nimue, a silver masked fawn bitch, who turned out to be his first conformation champion, first field champion and foundation bitch. Since that time he has bred a number of champions under his Timbrel prefix and co-bred several others with Nubby Errickson under her Amigo prefix. Russell has had some tremendous good fortune with a very small breeding program. The highlights of that were the Winner’s Bitch and Award of Merit that Ch. Timbrel’s Music Of The Night garnered from the Bred-By Exhibitor Class at the 1995 AWC National and the Award of Merit that Ch. Timbrel’s California Dreamin’ won at the National in 2003. He has also owned and shown Afghan Hounds, Salukis and Ibizan Hounds over the years and currently has three Whippets (Ch. Timbrel’s Music of the Night – “Rhapsody”, Raybar Windyroc War Bonnet – “Sydney”, and Raybar’s Sugar Magnolia – “Sugar”) and a Saluki (Ramazahn Brisen – “Bree”).
Russell has a broad background in the purebred dog world. A member of the AWC since the early 1980’s he was first voted onto the AWC Board of Directors almost seven years ago and served as the AWC Secretary for six years and is the current President of the Club. He has also been the Show Chairperson for 26 all breed dog shows as a member of the Sangre de Cristo Kennel Club and three Ibizan Hound Club of the United States National Specialties as a member of the IHCUS. He was approved to judge Whippets and Afghan Hounds in 1987 by the American Kennel Club; Salukis and Italian Greyhounds in 1989 and is currently now approved to judge the Hound Group, Italian Greyhounds, All-Breed Junior Showmanship and Best In Show.
Lure Coursing and Obedience
Linda Scanlon, Eagle, CO

Linda Scanlon spent her early years in the Scottish/English border country surrounded by English Springer Spaniels which her father trained for field work. While in college in Northern California, she “borrowed” an Alaskan Malamute and a Weimaraner which she trained for obedience. After graduation and a move to NYC, she acquired her first conformation dog, an Australian Terrier, a breed she kept for the next 20 years and showed to bench, obedience and field titles and also showed in Europe during a return stay there. Salukis entered the household in 1972 & have also been awarded titles in multiple fields, including the first two utility titled salukis (out of 6) in the US, & the only ones so titled in Canada to this date.
She has shown and bred
multiple dual champions and top ranked competitors.
Linda has served as president of several all breed kennel clubs as
well as multiple terms as president of the Saluki Club of America,
Inc. Twice she has been selected by her peers to judge conformation
at the saluki national specialty show.
Linda has judged in England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand,
Finland, Germany, and Sweden.
She began judging lure coursing in 1974, obedience in 1979,
conformation in 1986. She is the only AKC judge with full approval
in all three fields of endeavor.
As well as the salukis, her passions include her husband of many
years, her two grown sons, traveling, opera, cooking (and alas)
enjoying the results.
Futurity
Linda Johnson - Loganville, GA

I have been involved with the
sport of pure bred dogs since 1973. I was given a whippet in 1976 as
a gift from a handler who was involved in whippets. I was introduced
to Phoebe Booth in the latter part of the 70’s and was privileged
that she agreed to co-own Ch. Shamasan Bugs Bunny with me. Buggy and
Phoebe taught me how to properly handle and appreciate whippets, as
well as introducing me to some extraordinary people in our breed. I
joined the AWC in 1982.
Some highlights that were important to me as a breeder, a bitch
named “Linda”, Ch. Morshor’s Cross the Water, ROM. She won the 1986
Mid-West Specialty. Her son “Adam”, Ch. Barchet Turn it Loose, won
the 1985 AWC Futurity. He went on to win the 1987 AWC Southern
Specialty. In more recent years my heart dog and constant companion
for 15 1/2 years was “Jordan”, Ch. Barchet Singular Sensation, ROMX
. His Son “Goose”, Ch. O'Run Gustav Nordic Wind, SC, FCH, won the
1996 AWC Top 20, the 1997 Southern Specialty and went BOS to his
daughter, Ch. Watch Me True at First Light, “Dawn”, at the 2002 AWC
National Specialty.
As a whippet breeder I am truly humbled to have been chosen to judge
your outstanding hopefuls. I have been where you are today. This is
your showcase, for one of you on this day will forever be in whippet
history.
Veteran Sweepstakes, Stud Dog, Brood Bitch, Brace and Team
Janet Van Wormer, Sierra Vista, AZ

In late 1960 Janet obtained her first Doberman Pinscher starting her into the wonderful world of owning, showing, and breeding purebred dogs. In 1975 she obtained her first Whippet as a three-month-old puppy who later became Am/Can Ch. Kai Esa’s Mood Indigo ROMX “Sayra”, from Mrs. Tommie Jones of Tallahassee FL. Sighthound Review featured Sayra as Top Dam of the 1980’s. After a successful breeding producing five Champions, including a BIS dog between “Sayra” and Ch. Pathen’s Saja Suka ROM, “Suki” was acquired from Hank Speight. Janet purchased a young puppy bitch from Earl and Frank McInnus who later became Ch. Kindochaline’s Katrine F.Ch. “Katie”, and in 1982 she was tied for #1 Top Producing Whippet Bitch published in the Canine Chronicle stats. These three dogs were the foundation of Whippets bred under the prefix of Chehalem who had rock solid temperaments, could show, run, and do Obedience. In limited breeding she has bred BIS, Group Winners, Specialty Winners and multiple Champions in Dobermans, Whippets, and Shiba Inu. Janet is approved to judge Whippets, Dobermans, Rottweiler's, Shiba Inu, and Jr. Showmanship.
After many years she moved from Oregon to sunny Southeast Arizona. Janet is currently the Legislative Chair for Greater Sierra Vista Kennel Club. She is President of the Doberman Pinscher Club of America and has held many offices within that club. She is also one of the founding and charter members of Mt. Hood Doberman Pinscher Club. While in Oregon she was actively involved in Eugene Kennel Club holding every office at one time or another including President.

Altered Classes
Patience Renzulli - Paducah, KY

When Patience Renzulli was four years old she met a whippet, a little fawn bitch named Lady, who belonged to a neighbor. Years later, when she decided to get an AKC recognized breed to compete in Agility, no other breed could erase her memories of her childhood friend. She bought her first whippet in 1991, and assured the breeders who warned her of the Potato Chip Phenomenon that she would "only ever have one whippet."
Patience was blessed with some wonderful whippets. Multi BIF, Group winning, DC Warburton Duke Whittington, CD, LCM, TDI, CAV (Giacomino) gave her the thrill of her life by going BIF at the AWC National Specialty in San Diego. And her little Mama Pajama was twice second in the AWC Triathalon. The most thrilling moment in the show ring was when CH Warburton Hearts and Bones, SC, TRP, CR, Delta Pet Partner (Jessie) was BOB at the Supported Entry during the Eastern Specialty weekend.
Patience is proud of the AWC for offering Altered Classes, and is thrilled to have been asked to judge them at this year's National. She believes that altered dogs and their owners have a rightful place at this competition. Mama Pajama was Best Altered in two AWC National Specialties and had a blast doing it.
